CSC renews provisional appointment of SHS teachers

KAITHREEN CRUZ

THE Civil Service Commission (CSC) has granted the request of the Department of Education (DepEd) to renew the provisional appointment of 1,638 senior high schools (SHS) teachers hired in 2016.

These teachers were given a provisional appointment for School Year 2021 to 2022, in light of the postponement and rescheduling of the licensure examination for professional teachers (LEPT) in September 2020.

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) initially announced that the first batch of examinees for the LEPT in September will prioritize first-time test takers.

However, the teachers’ provisional appointment has several conditions — they must show proof that they have taken the LEPT at least once in the last five years and there should also be an “absence of available qualified LEPT eligible applicants in the DepEd

Registry of Qualified Applicants, as certified by the Schools Division Superintendent.”

The provisional appointment will be terminated when “qualified LEPT eligible applicants become available and are willing to accept the appointment.”

Earlier this month, DepEd assured provisional teachers they can continue teaching for the coming school year.

“Due to the unavoidable circumstances brought about by the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, 2021 LEPT was postponed. That’s why, as early as February this year, we have been coordinating with the PRC and [the] CSC to ensure that the affected provisional teachers can continue teaching in the upcoming school year,” Education Undersecretary for Planning, Human Resource and Organization Development Jesse Mateo said.
