Donaire, Casimero set for all-Filipino unification match

HISTORY is set to unfold in Philippine boxing.

For the first time ever, two Filipinos are set for a bantamweight unification match as World Boxing Council (WBC) champ Nonito Donaire collides against World Boxing Organization (WBO) titleist John Riel Casimero on August 14 at a site to be determined.

Showtime will televise the match as the main event of a triple header.

Donaire himself announced the news on his social media pages on Sunday, with Casimero confirming the fight by posting two Philippine flag emojis with an ‘x’ in between on Twitter on the same day.

Casimero likewise retweeted a tweet announcing his fight against Donaire.

The 31-year-old Casimero was supposed to face Guillermo Rigondeaux on August 14, but the Cuban boxer decided to give way for the all-Filipino clash.

Reportedly, Rigondeaux will face an opponent to be determined on the Donaire-Casimero undercard. If Rigondeaux wins that fight, he could challenge the winner between Donaire and Casimero.

“The Filipino Flash” Donaire regained the WBC belt after knocking out French Nordine Oubaali last month. The 38-year-old sports a 41-6 win-loss card with 27 knockouts.

On the other hand, “Quadro Alas” Casimero last fought in September last year when he scored a technical knockout win over Ghanaian Duke Micah. Casimero carries a 30-4 slate with 21 knockouts.
