Las Piñas National Science HS sports facilities go green

KAITHREEN CRUZ

THE Las Piñas National Science High School has recently completed the renovation of its sports facilities using green technology for sustainable sports and education infrastructure, in partnership with Dow Philippines and the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP).

As the first Dow Green Campus Project in the Philippines and the fifth in Asia Pacific, the partnership aims to improve students’ safety and sports learning experience with environment-friendly solutions.

“We used sustainable solutions to renovate school facilities such as running track, badminton court, and multi-purpose playgrounds using green technology with our Voramer technology, an environmentallyfriendly binder solution that is very low in volatile organic compounds,” said Dow President Jonathan Penrice.

Aside from the Voramer, Dow also used Fastrack and has improved a total area of more than 900 square meters.

Dow Philippines Country Manager Bobby Batungbacal explained how their technology was used to improve the school’s sports facilities.

“Voramer PU binders provide durability, safe and environment-friendly surfaces, while Fastrack technology [was] used for lane marking is highly

visible, long-lasting markings that can withstand punishing weather and traffic conditions while reducing volatile organic compound emissions toxic to humans,” he said.

PBSP said that this partnership with Dow for the Green Campus program combines the different elements crucial to educational intervention, which are STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), sustainability, and community partnership.

“As we journey toward a better normal, we hope that these upgraded

sports and other facilities serve as more than just physical infrastructure. We hope that they can serve as a beacon of positivity and hope,” PBSP President Rey Laguda added.

Las Piñas National Science HS principal Leonora Lustre also expressed appreciation to Dow Philippines for its continued support to the school since 2017, with its donation of related fishing materials being used in their science laboratories.

The turnover of the project was done virtually last June 8.
