Welcome to the Bini era

NIKA ROQUE

COMING from all parts of the Philippines, it was in 2018 when eight young girls found themselves among the hopefuls of the grand “Star Hunt Academy” auditions. Seeing some of their peers move on to more major leagues like “Pinoy Big Brother” or give up and go home, they were fortunate to be chosen by Star Magic for a rigorous two-year program in partnership with South Korean artists training group, MU Doctor, to be officially launched today as “Bini.”

Credited for a pre-debut sing and dance single titled “Da Coconut Nut” in 2020, Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoanna and Sheena winningly attracted a growing fan base in and outside the Philippines even before Star Magic felt they finally have what it takes to make it to the top.

With their huge and loyal following — a.k.a. the Bloom — long waiting for their formal introduction in showbiz, they weren’t disappointed by a grand event on KTX.ph last June 11, which finally unveiled their favorite misses as “Bini” (from the Filipino translation “binibini”), and the Philippine entertainment’s next big girl group.

Simply titled “The Launch,” group leader and “Kadenang Ginto” actress Jhoanna said on their big night that Bini’s goal is to represent the modern Filipina on the world stage. “She is informed, empowered and not afraid to try new things,” she declared.

Split into two parts, The Launch initially saw the girls modelling athleisure, formal, and Filipiniana custom collections by Francis Libiran via “The Runway;” followed by “The Showcase,” where the girls showed off how their two-year training was worth it. Gwen and Sheena did a cover of KZ Tandingan’s “Tagu-taguan;” Aiah, Stacey, and Mikha presented their original composition “World War C,” which talks about staying strong during the pandemic; while and Colet, Jhoanna, and Maloi sang Janine Berdin’s “Biyaya.”

For a grand finale, Bini performed their brand new single “Born to Win,” which powerfully reflects all that they — and the Filipino youth should — have today: the courage, strength and determination to become their best selves in the face of adversity.

As Stacey put it, “Hindi po talaga maiiwasan yung mga [struggles and] negative comments in life pero I believe na malalagpasan namin lahat

We believe that life is beautiful and we also remind ourselves that we are blessed and we are born to win.”

"Born to Win" by Bini will soon be released Thai, Japanese, Spanish, and Bahasa Indonesia.
