Duterte keeps approval ratings up

BY WILLIAM B. DEPASUPIL

AS President Rodrigo Duterte enters the last 12 months of his term, a so-called independent poll indicates that he has kept his high approval and trust ratings.

According to the latest survey of the RP-Mission and Development Foundation Inc. (RPMDinc), the President remains popular in the National Capital Region (NCR or Metro Manila) with an approval rating of 77 percent, and a trust rating of 72 percent.

“In our current trending political analyses, President Rodrigo Duterte’s performance rating is still commendable in spite of the challenges that he is currently facing. Majority of the constituents appreciate the efforts he has done in NCR, “said Dr. Paul Martinez, executive director of RPMDinc, in a statement released on Saturday.

“The ‘Duterte’ family name has embedded it’s brand name in@ the@ society@ wherein@ the@ possibility of his daughter running for a political position will be a great advantage,” he added.@ The “independent and noncommissioned survey” was conducted from July 3 to 10 with 3,500 respondents.

There@ was@ no@ explanation@ how the survey was conducted.@ In the same survey, Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr., chairman of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), came out as the top performer among government agency officials with an approval rating of 70 percent.

Closely behind were Interior Secretary Eduardo Año (68 percent), Public Works Secretary Mark Villar (66 percent), Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade (65 percent) and Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez (63 percent).

Meanwhile, the Department of Justice emerged as the most trusted at 68 percent, followed by the Department of Tourism (65 percent) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (63 percent).@ Overall public satisfaction on Cabinet officials is at 57 percent.

The surveyor said the job performance ratings and achievements of the officials necessitate being continually monitored to appraise the programs that they have implemented and their effectiveness and impact on their constituents amid the pandemic.

The government, it added, should also be evaluated to determine if its initiatives were really helpful in alleviating the plight of the citizens in relation to the challenges to their livelihoods.

Fifteen Cabinet officials were assessed, of which 10 got high approval ratings and five got “needs improvement.”
