50 villages in Bulacan under floodwater

BY FREDERICK SILVERIO

HEAVY rain brought by the southwest monsoon, enhanced by Typhoon “Fabian” (international name: “Nepartak”) and aggravated by high tide from Manila Bay, has submerged at least 50 villages from 10 towns in Bulacan province.

The Provincial Disaster Risk (PDRRMO) of Bulacan reported Reduction Management Office that Paombong town has 15 flooded barangay (villages).

Five villages in Guiguinto, four in Marilao and five in Balagtas were also submerged in floodwater.

Meycauyan City and five more towns — Bulakan, Hagonoy, Bocaue, Calumpit, Sta. Maria — were also submerged under 1- to 3-and-1/2 feet of floodwater but were unreported in the PDRRMO situational report.

It was learned that Hagonoy and Calumpit were the most affected towns due to the release of water from Bustos Dam on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

At 6 a.m. on Saturday, Bustos Dam released 84 cubic meters of water after its water volume nearly reached the spilling level of 17.35 meters. The said dam also released 28 cubic meters of water on Thursday and twice the same volume on Friday.

It was also learned that 12 barangay and provincial roads were reported impassable to fourwheel vehicles.

The PDRRMO also said a landslide took place in Barangay Prenza 1 in Marilao town, but no casualties and evacuees were reported.

Gov. Daniel Fernando sent two army trucks for “Libreng Sakay” in Hagonoy and Calumpit.

The governor also ordered the continuous monitoring of the submerged villages as well as the providing of regular updates on Typhoon “Fabian.”

Meanwhile, the water elevation in Ipo Dam as of 6 a.m. on Saturday was at 98.72 meters — just a few meters below the spilling level of 101 meters. Angat Dam, which has a spilling level of 210 meters, was at 185.89 meters.
