‘Political dynasty’ in Bulacan falls

FREDERICK SILVERIO

THE rule of an established political family in Bulacan province is over after candidates from the National Unity Party (NUP) dominated the May 9, 2022 local and national elections.

The Sy-Alvarado family’s more than three-decades of political reign headed by incumbent Vice Gov. Willy Sy-Alvarado ended when he was defeated by NUP standard bearer Gov. Daniel Fernando via a landslide.

First District Rep. Jonathan Sy-Alvarado, who sought his third term, lost to former Malolos Mayor Danny Domingo, also from the NUP.

In Bulacan politics, the Alvarados had never lost in races for various local positions.

Charo Sy-Alvarado was the only one left standing as she won her first term as vice mayor of Hagonoy town.

Fernando’s running mate vice governor elect Alex Castro, also under the NUP flag, won against former congressman and governor Jonjon Mendoza.

Sweeps were recorded in three Bulacan towns.

The team’s candidate for board member Ricky Roque also made it (fifth district).

Regie Javier, Ryan Sagala, AC de Leon, Ysabel Liwanag, Raul Gatuz, Raymund Lopez and Allen Marcelo.

The Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan in Guiguinto town had 11 winning candidates -- Rep.
