A HIGH SCHOOL student from the Bicol Region won the 10th Asean Quiz National Competition held last week at the People’s Television (PTV) studios in Quezon City.

Armela Persia, who studies at the Donsol National Comprehensive School, took home a cash prize of P50,000 and a college scholarship from STI.

Second place went to the National Capital Region’s Brian James Cerdeña of Pinagbuhatan High School, Pasig City, and third place to Cagayan Valley Region’s Key Calpito of Cabarroguis National School of Arts and Trades, Quirino.

Cerdena received a P30,000 cash prize

and Calpito P20,000. They also each received four-year scholarships from STI.

The three will represent the Philippines in the regional level of the 10th Asean Quiz, to be held in Myanmar later this year.

Sixteen champions from each of the country’s regions competed in a series of tests on their general knowledge of Asean.

In his closing remarks at the event, Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary for Asean Affairs Daniel Espiritu noted that it was the Philippines who conceptualized the quiz show.

Espiritu said Philippine teams consistently placed at or near the top of the quiz’s rankings.

The quiz is held every two years, with the Asean member-states rotating as host.

It is designed to raise Asean awareness among the region’s youth in a friendly competition setting.

The quiz is a project of the Asean Committee on Culture and Information and the People’s Television Network, in partnership with the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Education, the Presidential Communications Operations Office, the Philippine Information Agency and Radyo Pilipinas. The delayed telecast of the 10th Asean Quiz show will be aired on PTV and its provincial stations on June 4, with a replay on June 5.
