Gabriela to raise opposition banner

MOISES CRUZ

THE Gabriela Party-list was declared one of the winners on Thursday, overcoming extensive misinformation and red-tagging efforts, as well as a pending disqualification case, maintaining a winning streak for the marginalized women since 2004.

According to the final result, Gabriela received 423,891 votes, giving Rep. Arlene Brosas her third and final term.

“Filipino women stand victorious today after beating the nastiest machinations to totally shun women’s representation in Congress,” Brosas said.

Gabriela Party-list has again joined the ranks of the Philippines’ undefeated party-lists, which include the Anti-Crime and Terrorism Community Involvement and Support Party-list (since 2013), the Cooperative Natcco (since 2004) and Citizens’ Battle Against Corruption (since 2001).

“This victory is even more significant as we will hoist the banner of the opposition in the lower House amid the return to Malacañang of the Marcoses. Despite having only three seats in the 19th Congress, we in the Makabayan bloc will continue to challenge the antipeople policies,” Brosas said.

The lawmaker pointed out that attempts at vote-buying frameup, red-tagging, disqualification, harassment of chapter leaders and organizers, and last-minute threats to defer the proclamation were among the worst attacks throughout the 2022 electoral campaign.

“We will aggressively champion the women’s agenda in the 19th Congress and push for comprehensive amendments to the Anti-Rape Law, the repeal of the Terror Law, the repeal of regressive taxes and the review of the implementation of the Safe Spaces Act,” she added.

The Commission on Elections proclaimed on Thursday 55 out of 177 groups in the party-list race vying for 63 seats at the House of Representatives.
