Most Filipinos expect BBM to perform well

BY KAITHREEN CRUZ

AMAJORITY of Filipinos expect Presidentelect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to perform well or very well in his first 100 days in office, the Pahayag Second Quarter survey of PUBLiCUS showed.

It said that 44 percent expect him to perform “very well,” and 24 percent said that they expect him to perform “well.”

“Our survey suggests that roughly two out of three Filipinos expect President Bongbong Marcos to perform well during the first 100 days of his presidency. President Marcos Jr. will have to hit the ground running from Day 1 to live up to these high expectations,” PUBLiCUS Executive Director Aureli Sinsuat said.

Meanwhile, 9 percent of the respondents expect Marcos to perform “very poorly,” 5 percent expect him to perform “poorly,” 11 percent said they expect him to perform “neither poorly nor well,” and 7 percent said they were unsure.

In the survey held from June 16 to 22, 2022 among 1,500 registered Filipino voters randomly sampled by US-based panel marketplace PureSpectrum, respondents were also asked to select the three most important issues they believe the incoming administration should focus on. These are the economy (73 percent), job generation (53 percent) and education reform (32 percent).

Sinsuat said that although these could not be completely addressed over the course of 100 days, the public expects these issues to be prioritized by the incoming president and his team during their first few months in office.

He also noted that the continuation of landmark programs of the outgoing administration of President Rodrigo Duterte earned the majority support from respondents.

These were the Build, Build, Build (79 percent), war on illegal drugs (73 percent), independent foreign policy (68 percent), BARMM transition (64 percent), and the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-Elcac) (56 percent).

Sinsuat said that Duterte’s popularity could have made a significant effect on respondents’ support for the continuation of his administration’s programs.

“While the level of policy continuity between the outgoing and incoming administrations remains to be seen, it is reasonable to believe that public opinion on the Marcos Jr. administration will be influenced, at least in part, by its ability to continue and improve upon at least some of the Duterte administration’s more popular flagship programs,” Sinsuat said.

Results of the survey have a ±3 percent margin of error.
