PH LIFTERS TO COMPETE IN ASIAN YOUTH, JRS CHAMPIONSHIPS

VIETNAM Southeast Asian Games double gold medalist Vanessa Sarno and World Youth champion Rose Jean Ramos will spearhead the Philippines’ campaign in the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships slated July 15 to 25 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Sarno, who hails from Bohol, will compete in the women’s 71kg category of the junior division (15 to 20 years old) along with Rose Jean Ramos (women’s 45kg), Rosegie Ramos (women’s 49kg), Giselle Anne Betua (women’s 55kg), Joefry Frasco Jr. (men’s 55kg) and John Raphael Macato (men’s 67kg).

The Zamboanga City-based Rose Jean Ramos is also entered in the Youth division (13 to 17 years old), joining Angeline Colonia (women’s 40kg), Rosalinda Faustino (women’s 49kg), Kiesha Mae Felisilda (women’s 55kg), Prince Keil de los Santos (men’s 49kg), Jun Dominic Bohol (men’s 55kg), Adrian Cristobal (men’s 61kg) and Christian Rodriguez (men’s 67kg).

The Filipino lifters will be accompanied by coaches Allen Jayfrus Diaz (Zamboanga), Christopher Bureros (Cebu), Samuel Alegada (Bohol) and Edmundo Jose Cardan (Manila).

The 18-year-old Sarno captured two gold medals (snatch and total) and one silver medal (clean and jerk) in the Youth division during the 2019 edition of the tournament held in Pyongyang, North Korea.

The other medalists were Chariz Macawili, who pocketed two silvers (clean and jerk, and total) and one bronze (snatch) in the 40kg category and Rosegie Ramos, who won the bronze medal (snatch) in the 49kg category.

The Uzbekistan tournament is part of the national team’s preparation for next year’s SEA Games in Cambodia and Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

Sarno, the reigning Asian champion, won the women’s 71kg gold medal in the Vietnam SEA Games last month, setting new records in snatch (104kg), clean and jerk (124kg) and total (239kg).

Rose Jean Ramos, 17, successfully defended the women’s 45kg title at the World Youth Weightlifting Championships at the Domo de la Feria in Leon City, Guanajuato, Mexico early this month. She ruled the clean and jerk (85kg), came in second in the snatch (70kg) and registered the best total of 155kg.

The Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas (SWP) will also send athletes to Bogota, Colombia for the International Weightlifting Federation Senior World Championships, which is the first event on the 2024 Paris Olympic Games qualifying schedule.

The SWP will also hold its National Open on August 8 to 12. JEAN MALANUM
