BAGUIO BEGINS TREE-PLANTING SEASON

GABY B. KEITH

The City Environment and Parks Management Office (Cepmo) announced the opening of tree planting activities in the Summer Capital following the observance of Arbor Day on June 25 as part of the Saleng Festival celebration in the city. Cepmo officer Rhenan Diwas said interested groups and individuals may register with their office at City Hall for coordination and scheduling until September 30. Forester Floro Bastian said the Cepmo will provide the seedlings and assign the planting sites for the requesting groups but participants must bring their gardening tools, trash bags, gloves, and drinking water. Bastian said they have extended the celebration of Arbor Day every Saturday of the month until August due to the volume of groups that signified intention to conduct tree planting sessions. On June 25, four groups composed of 250 participants planted a total of 450 saplings at Wright Park, Forbes Park, Arboretum, and Diplomat Heritage Hill. Participants came from the Philippine Army, National Institute of Information Technology, Baguio City National High School, Chemical Engineering Institute, and Alliance of Legally Married Police Wives. Arbor Day is the highlight of the 2nd Saleng Festival, which includes a calendar of environment-related activities that will run until September, with the theme aligned with the 2022 World Environment Day’s “Only One Earth.”
