thE movie and television review and classification Board (MTRCB) confirms that it has reviewed the controversial motion picture “Maid in Malacañang,” and has given it a Parental Guidance (PG) classification.

In a statement sent to The Manila Times, signed by new MTRCB Chairman Diorella “Lala” Sotto, the classification is defined as a “motion picture [that] may contain themes that require parental supervision and guidance.”

Welcomed by the movie’s production outfit Viva Films, the need to caution parents of their responsibility to guide their children in watching Maid in Malacañang stems from the lingering accusation that filmmaker Darryl Yap aims to rewrite history in favor of the Marcoses, who have just regained power in the country.

Yap has constantly reminded viewers that “Maid in Malacañang is not a bio-pic but a story about a family,” calls to boycott the movie continues to grow from different sectors of society.

To assure the public that the MTRCB proceeded with its review aware of sentiments for and against the movie, the agency finally stated, “We note that the said motion picture is a dramatization of the last 72 hours of the Marcos family in the Palace in 1986 and does not purport to be a documentary.

“While the PG rating serves to guide viewers and was assigned by the Board based on its own judgment applying contemporary Filipino cultural values as standard, parents are encouraged to conduct their own assessment and use their best judgment to guide their children’s viewing activities.”
