Beneficiary harvests 522 kilos of bangus

A TECHNOLOGY Business Incubation (TBI) beneficiary in Leyte harvested 522 kilos of bangus (milkfish) after a four-month culture period.

TBI is part of the Department of Agriculture National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (DA-NFRDI) program. It aims to determine the partial production and survival rate and estimate the investment return on milkfish farming in ponds.

“NFRDI’s TBI program has been a great help to me. Before, I was the one who bought bangus and shrimp, but now, I am producing and selling milkfish. I can also buy fry for the second cycle,” said Sharon Jacaban, a milkfish incubatee from Barugo, Leyte.

Milkfish is a top culture commodity and is cultivated in many areas across the country, including Eastern Visayas.

Seed and marketable fish supply, however, have become limited, especially during the pandemic. Through the TBI program, pond operators and fish growers are being capacitated, providing them agricultural inputs including fry supply, commercial feeds, pond fertilizers and chemicals.

“As such, the incubatees can become more self-sustaining in their next production, and the milkfish supply in the locality can be augmented,” the DANFRDI said.

TBI is funded by the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research.
