Subic seizes P46-M smuggled cigarettes

MAHATMA RANDY DATU

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT: The Bureau of Customs-Port of Subic has seized another container of smuggled cigarettes from Singapore valued at P46.28 million.

The port had received information on the shipment and issued a control order.

After checking the container van, Customs officers discovered 1,122 cases of Marvels Filter cigarettes that were declared as fabrics.

The consignee, Proline Logistics Philippines Inc., was not registered with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority as importer of foreign cigarettes and tobacco products.

It was also not included in the Bureau of Internal Revenue list of registered importers of cigarette brands.

Maritess Martin, port district collector, also issued a warrant of seizure and detention against the shipment for violation of National Tobacco Administration Memorandum Circular 03 and Republic Act 10863, or the “Customs Modernization Tariff Act.”

Last month, the Port of Subic also seized two shipments amounting to P84.97 million from the same consignee.

Martin said they would continue strengthening their border protection efforts against the entry of illicit goods into the country.
