Marinero, La Salle near D-League finals

MARINERONG Pilipino and EcoOil-La Salle moved one win closer to the finals after beating separate foes in the PBA D-League best-of-three semifinals on Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Playing in their respective semifinal Game One matches, the Skippers dispatched Apex Fuel-San Sebastian, 74-66, while the Green Archers stopped Adalem Construction-St. Clare, 89-74.

Juan Gomez de Liaño logged 16 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists to lead the way for Marinerong Pilipino, which jumped on Apex Fuel with a 21-8 start and never looked back.

Arvin Gamboa chimed in 15 points, five boards, two assists, and two blocks for the Skippers, who led by as many as 17, 72-55.

Jollo Go tallied 14 points while Adrian Nocum nabbed 12 points and seven rebounds in the win.

“We’re happy for the players because they are able to execute the game plan, but this is just Game One. We still have to execute in Game Two,” said Marinerong Pilipino head coach Yong Garcia.

Ichie Altamirano logged 12 points, five rebounds, and two steals to pace San Sebastian.

Meanwhile, CJ Austria scored eight of his 15 points in La Salle’s 11-2 run that created an insurmountable 71-55 cushion from St. Clare in the final canto.

Austria also got seven rebounds but the debuting Schonny Winston made the most impact with his 24 points, four assists, three rebounds, and three assists.

Kevin Quiambao also came through with 18 points, six rebounds, four blocks, and three dimes off the bench, while Mark Nonoy notched 15 points.

Johnsherick Estrada led the Saints with 14 points, seven rebounds, and four assists in the defeat, as John Rojas cashed in 19 markers.
