LA TRINIDAD, Benguet: The provincial government of Benguet has extended financial assistance to the province of Abra in support of the latter’s relief operations for families affected by the July 27, 2022 earthquake.

Gov. Melchor Diclas, a medical doctor, on Thursday said the donation worth P500,000 was sourced from their disaster risk reduction trust fund.

Board member Alexander Fianza; Jessie Domeris, Sangguniang Panlalawigan (provincial council) chairman of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO); and Silver Pilo from the office of the governor turned over the donation to the local government unit (LGU) of Abra recently.

Abra Gov. Dominic Valera expressed his gratitude to the Abra LGU for the donation.

He said there are still some people setting up tents as they still fear going back to their homes after the earthquake.

According to Arnel Valdez, officer in charge of the provincial DRRMO, the homes are near landslide-prone areas.

“They can go back to their fields, visit their homes or tend to their animals, but they cannot sleep there,” Valdez said.

Abra is still experiencing aftershocks after the July 27 earthquake. Valdez said the province recorded a 4.1 magnitude aftershock two days ago.

According to him, a team from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology that earlier stayed in Abra for a week said it will take three to six months to one year for the aftershocks to cease.
