Teacher raped and killed on World Teachers’ Day

LEGAZPI CITY, Albay: A 24-year-old high school teacher in Claveria town of the island province of Masbate was raped and killed allegedly by a construction worker on World Teachers’ Day, Oct. 5, 2022.

LtCol. Maria Luisa Calubaquib, regional spokesman for the Philippine National Police (PNP), identified the victim as Jessica Mangubat, 24, from San Ramon Institute and a resident of Barangay Manapao, Claveria, Masbate.

The suspect was identified as Alvin Yanzon, 30, a construction worker and resident of Purok 2, Sitio Bodega, Barangay Pasig, also in Claveria.

The police said the victim’s body was discovered by her co-teacher inside the room she was renting at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

The victim also suffered a head injury, probers said.

After the incident, the PNP in Claveria town immediately conducted a hot pursuit operation and arrested Yanzon.

Recovered from the suspect were a T-shirt with bloodstains and a 12-inch piece of wood.

According to a Masbate Police Provincial Office report sent to the PNP regional command here, Mangubat suffered serious injury to her head that led to her instantaneous death.

The suspect, who is now behind bars, faces murder charges.

BGen. Rudolph Dimas, Bicol police regional director, said Yanzon will be dealt with the full force of the law for the heinous crime he had committed.

“We promised to the victim’s family that justice will be served over the gruesome killing of the victim,” Dimas added.
