Telcos ordered to resume text blasts

FRANCIS EARL CUETO

AS scam or smishing messages continue, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) directed the country’s telcos — Globe Telecoms, Smart Communications and DITO Telecommunity — to continue sending out text blast warnings to their subscribers.

According to the NTC, public awareness is much needed that is why the text blast should continue in order to educate the subscribers against the personalized scam messages.

The NTC said the telcos should again send out text blasts from October 5 to 11, 2022.

It said in their memorandum that this is part of their Kontra Text Scam Campaign.

The text blast contains the message: Huwag pong maniwala sa text na naglalaman ng inyong pangalan na nag-aalok ng trabaho, pabuya, o pera. Ito po ay scam (Do not believe in texts containing your name offering jobs, rewards or money. These are scams). I-report sa https://ntc. gov.ph.

Likewise, the NTC also asked the telcos to continue with their process of blocking the SIM cards that were being used for the scams.

Meanwhile, the NTC also tasked the NTC regional directors and officers in charge to make appearances in their respective local radio and television stations.

The NTC said they should do it at least 10 times in order to warn and educate the public on reporting these text scams.

The Kontra Text Scam campaign was launched by the NTC in September, in a bid to inform the public and avoid being victims of text scam fraudsters.
