THE country recorded higher rice and corn inventories as of October 1, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported on Monday.

At 2.08 million metric tons (MMT), the rice stock was 6.5 percent higher than the 1.954 MMT recorded a year earlier. Month on month, the increase was a larger 43.5 percent compared to September’s 1.45 MMT.

Corn stocks, meanwhile, posted double-digit month-on-month and year-earlier gains to 720,600 MT — 40.2-percent up from October 2021’s 513,930 MT and 28.3 percent higher than September’s 561,700 MT.

Households and commercial establishments accounted for the bulk of the rice inventory, the former holding 56.3 percent or 1.172 MMT and the latter 38.3 percent or 798,120 MT. Both tallies were up 10.7 percent and 9.5 percent year on year, respectively, and 65.1 percent and 27.1 percent month on month.

The National Food Authority, whose 111,040 MT inventory was down 33.2 percent from a year earlier and 1.2 percent from September, had the smallest share.

As for corn, 510,570 MT — more than two-thirds or 70.9 percent of inventory — was with commercial establishments. The latest tally was 69.8 percent higher year on year and 9.6 percent up month on month.

Household corn stocks totaling 210,040 MT accounted for the remaining 29.1 percent of inventory. While this was 119.4 percent higher compared to September, it was 1.5-percent down compared to the October 2021 level.
