UAP Davao gears up for Defining Spaces

THE Defining Spaces is a centerpiece project of the United Architects of the Philippines-Davao Chapter (UAP Davao). It is an annual construction exhibit showcasing architectural and building products of leading suppliers and construction industry partners in the country.

Started in 2007, it is one of Mindanao’s premier and longestrunning construction exhibits. The affair is a three-day event that brings together architects, engineers, contractors, architecture students and end users to participate and enjoy a variety of activities filled with fun, excitement and learning experience. Aside from the exhibit itself, Defining Spaces also includes technical presentations, lectures, forums, games, raffles, student competitions, performances from invited artists, as well as fashion shows.

The 2020, 2021 and 2022 editions of the Defining Spaces were canceled due to the pandemic. But this coming year, the construction exhibit will make a comeback. UAP Davao Chapter is presently in the thick of preparations for the staging of the much-awaited 2023 iteration of the exhibit, slated on February 24 to 26 of next year at The Annex of SM City Davao in Davao City.

Next year’s 14th Defining Spaces, which banners the theme “Designing Spaces for the Better Normal,” advocates for the design of spaces that are safe and healthy as we embrace the new normal. It will feature a total of 80 booths, the largest number thus far since the inception of Defining Spaces. A highlight of the coming exhibit is the presence of Architect Royal Pineda, who will grace the event as its guest speaker. He is the principal architect and chief executive officer of BUDJI + ROYAL Architecture + Design, credited for the design of such projects as the Clark International Airport and The Athletics Stadium and Aquatics Center in New Clark City.

Heading the organizing committee of Defining Spaces 14 is UAP Davao’s current Chapter President Gilbert Peter Fortich. He is ably supported by the chapter’s board of directors, namely Neil Braw, vice president for programs and development; Sheana Bacus, vice president for operations; Angeluz Tesoro, chapter secretary; Mendrado Canusa, chapter treasurer; Catrina Joy Patron, chapter auditor; Queene Malaki, director for graphics; Ramon Tanglao, director for profession; Gimelle Butas, director for operations; Joshua Ray Lasa, director for membership; Lemuel Ness Buhay, director for promotions; Sandro Adora, director for operations; and Carlyne Solis, director for recreation.

Organizing the upcoming event, members of the committee are excited that after a very long wait, Defining Spaces 14 is finally going to happen soon. Architect Fortich shares his thoughts: “It’s about time that this event will have to push through. After two years of non-face-to-face activities, this event will reacquaint architects with suppliers regarding the latest materials trends and, at the same time, renew our relationship with our partners in the industry.”
