HD Spikers gun for finals berth

NIEL VICTOR C. MASOY

A FINALS berth is within reach for Cignal to take today, November 29, in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference at the PhilSports Arena, where the final day of the round-robin semifinals is to take place.

And the HD Spikers, who are to face the defending champions Petro Gazz Angels at 2:30 p.m., don’t even need to win to do just that at Ultra, where Petro Gazz’s title-retention bid and Creamline’s Grand Slam aspirations are all on the line as well.

Sporting a 2-0 slate that comes with six points, the best by far in the round-robin semis where the top two teams advance to the Big Dance, Cignal just needs to win two sets to guarantee itself a seat in the finals, and eclipse its back-to-back bronze medal finishes in the Open and Invitational Conferences this season.

That is because winning two sets merits a point which will hike the HD Spikers’ total to seven, something that their closest pursuers in Petro Gazz (1-1) and the Grand Creamline (1-1) couldn’t even match.

As it stands, the Angels have three points and they could only get two more if they could not sweep or defeat the HD Spikers in four sets. A three- or four-set win merits three points.

A five-set win will only give Petro Gazz two points for a total of five and Cignal a point for a total of seven, enough points for the latter to finish in the top two and seize a finals berth.

The Cool Smashers likewise have three points and the highest they can get is six if they went on to sweep the Chery Tiggo Crossovers, who are already out of contention for the finals. Creamline and Chery Tiggo collide at 5:30 p.m.

“This is a big opportunity for us to be better for our next game,” said Cignal head coach Shaq de los Santos, talking about his team’s 2325, 25-23, 28-26, 25-18 win over Creamline last Sunday.

“We still have to do extra workouts and study Petro Gazz. This win (over Creamline) doesn’t mean that we have to be complacent. We have to stay all out because we’re

just starting.”
