Cargo ship runs aground in Sorsogon

RHAYDZ BARCIA

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Bicol is conducting a thorough inspection of a seabed where a domestic cargo vessel ran aground in the waters off Sitio Boracay, Barangay Luneta, Barcelona, Sorsogon on Friday.

The PCG in Sorsogon reported over the weekend that the LCT Regent 101, owned and operated by Southern Regent Shipping Inc., was stuck on shallow waters on January 20.

The vessel departed from Lazi, Siquijor at 3 a.m. on Thursday, January 19, and was bound for Lidong, Albay when it ran aground in Barcelona town.

PCG personnel from Sorsogon and its substation in Matnog collaborated with members of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office and the Philippine Army to conduct an investigation and find out if the seabed was damaged by the incident.

The PCG also wants to check the integrity of the ship’s underwater hull and make sure that the ship is not leaking oil.

The Bicol Region has been battered by bad weather in the past few weeks due to the shear line and low-pressure area.
