Maj. Shellamie Chang, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, said patrolling members of the 2nd Zamboanga City Mobile Force Company and the Bureau of Customs intercepted a boat loaded with over 300 boxes of cigarettes worth more than P5 million off Tictabon Island.

She said five crew men were also arrested by the police.

She identified the arrested individuals as Saham Sahisa, boat captain, 40; Nasri Hussam, 40; Alnasri Mawadi, 25; Usman Samla, 51; and Alkimar Mijan, 25 — all from Zamboanga City.

“The crew members failed to present pertinent documents of the cargos,” Chang said.

The confiscated contraband was turned over to the Bureau of Customs.

Chang said another anti-smuggling operation led by members of the 2nd Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Mobile

Force Company also intercepted a truck transporting 85 boxes of cigarettes valued at over P1 million at a checkpoint in Kumalarang town in Zamboanga Sibugay.

She said truck driver Ajijul Eliyasan Sabtal, 30, was arrested after failing to present Customs papers for the cargo.

The regional information officer also said the 2nd Zamboanga City Mobile Force Company and the Bureau of Customs confiscated over six tons of onions when a police maritime patrol intercepted a boat off Labuan village in Zamboanga City.

The boat’s five crewmen identified as Mark Dolotino, Rodolfo Suganat, Aldisar Abdulmajid, Samson Abdulmajid and Sadimar Abdulmajid were also held for questioning after failing to present any pertinent papers for their cargo worth more than P2.5 million.

Authorities did not release the names of the owners of the contraband.
