BALANGA CITY, Bataan: The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Sunday, January 29, elevated a shrine in Hermosa, Bataan, dedicated to Saint John Paul 2nd.

The Diocese of Balanga announced that the CBCP in its ongoing 125th plenary declared the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of Saint John Paul II in Barangay Culis as a national shrine. More than 80 bishops are meeting at the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center in Manila.

The first and only diocesan shrine dedicated to Saint John Paul 2nd in the country is the first national shrine of the diocese composed of Catholic parishes in 11 towns and a city in Bataan headed by Bishop Ruperto Santos.

It is the 28th national shrine in the country. Before its transfer to Culis, the shrine was first established in the former Philippine Refugee Processing Center in Morong, Bataan, home to more than 400,000 Indo-Chinese refugees who fled their countries in the late 1970s. It was located at the site in Morong where then Pope John Paul 2nd held Mass for the refugees sometime in February of 1981.
