BY NIEL VICTOR C. MASOY

THE Philippines bagged another gold medal in the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Youth Championships in Durres, Albania ON MONDAY, MARCH 27 (MANILA TIME).

Albert Ian de los Santos ruled the men’s 61-kg division in the weeklong tournament.

The 16-year-old lifted 110kg in snatch and 149kg in clean and jerk for a total of 259kg.

De los Santos credited the lone Filipino Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz for helping him to be successful in this competition.

“Hidilyn Diaz is an inspiration to us all; her victory gives us motivation, gives us hope,” he said.

“I was born into this sport because my mom and dad were both international weightlifters, and I was lucky enough to train with Hidilyn for the summer. She and her coach taught me about having the right mindset. They gave me their wisdom,” he added.

De los Santos’ mother Diwa is one of the Philippine team coaches.

Perhat Bagtyyarov of Turk-menistan finished second to de los santos and took home the silver medal with a total lift of 258kg.

Bagtyyarov raised 114kg in snatch and 144kg in clean and jerk.

K Brum of Vietnam settled for the bronze medal with a total of 255kg. He lifted 113 in snatch and 142 in clean and jerk.

De los Santos became the second Filipino weightlifter to take home a gold medal in the competition after Prince Keil de los Santos.

The 15-year-old Prince Keil ruled the men’s 49kg division last Sunday with a total lift of 205kg. He lifted 92kg in snatch and 113kg in clean and jerk.
