Marcos assures BARMM of peace commitment

BY KRISTINA MARALIT

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday assured his administration’s full commitment to fulfilling all agreements under the Bangsamoro peace process as he commemorated the ninth anniversary of the signing of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB).

In a video message, Marcos said the government under his watch is determined to sustain the gains of the peace process in the southern tip of the country.

“For nine years the peace pact has stood firm and the Bangsamoro people have thrived and flourished. We shall ensure that they continue to do so,” he stated.

“Under this administration, the political and normalization tracks of the peace process continue to gain momentum. Our partners in the BARMM (Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao), continue to deliver on their commitments on the tracks with the recent passing of the critical Bangsamoro Electoral Code.”

“We in the national government will do our part to fulfill our commitments under the peace agreements and see its full implementation. We shall not waiver from this. As I have said before, the path to lasting peace is under construction. But we shall build and walk this path together so that our children and the generations that will follow shall live lives of prosperity and of peace,” he further said.

Signed in 2014 during the administration of the late President Benigno Simeon Aquino 3rd, the CAB paved the way for the establishment of the Bangsamoro, a new political entity that replaced the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

It was the conclusion of 17 years of negotiations between the Government of the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

The agreement mainly calls for Muslim self-rule in parts of the southern Philippines in exchange for deactivation of rebel forces by the MILF whose decommissioning is expected to wrap up by 2024.
