SOFTBALL MAKES COMEBACK IN CAVITE

DENNIS ABRINA

IMUS CITY, Cavite: To further strengthen the city’s sports development program, Mayor Alex Advincula revived the sport of softball by hosting the 1st AJAA Cup inter-barangay softball tournament held at the Imus Grandstand and Track Oval in Barangay Malagasang 1-G.

Advincula said softball was popular in the 1970s and 1980s not only in Cavite but in the entire country. He said Cavite used to be a powerhouse in the sport and some members of the Blu Boys national softball teams in the past are from Cavite.

The 1st AJAA Cup offers a P100,000 cash prize to the champion, P75,000 to the first runner-up, P50,000 to the second runner-up and P25,000 to the third runner-up.

The City of Cavite, meanwhile, is hosting the softball tournament of the 2023 Regional Athletic Association Meet that opened on Friday, March 24, and will run for two more weekends at the Montano Grandstand in Cavite City.

The opening of the tournament that drew 17 teams from Region 4A (Calabarzon) was graced by Cavite City Mayor Denver Chua, Vice Mayor Raleigh Grepo Rusit, Assistant School Division Superintendent Dr. Juan Araojo Jr. and Regional Director Atty. Alberto Escobar.

Calabarzon comprises the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon.

Cavite Third District Rep. Adrian Jay Advincula, on the other hand, is also supporting the volleyball and basketball program of Cavite with the staging of the 1st AJ Cup inter-cluster volleyball and basketball tournaments.
