Welcome to the ‘Oatside’

CHRISTINA ALPAD

POPULAR Singaporean oat milk brand Oatside is finally available for retail in the Philippines.

The young and popular brand, which founder and CEO Benedict Lim started in 2020, is often spotted in cafes and supermarkets in neighboring Asian countries such as Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

In the Philippines, Oatside first partnered with cafes like PickUp Coffee, FRNK and Bo’s Coffee to give locals the taste of the oat milk brand. Following its availability in the country, Lim is confident Filipinos will find oat milk as a suitable partner for their coffee drinks.

“Oat contains starch so it has more body, more texture. Because it releases starch in the final oat product, we get that natural creaminess that you don’t get from nuts or other alternatives. Finally, oat milk doesn’t compromise the taste of coffee, so coffee lovers will find it suitable for their drink,” Lim said during Oatside’s grand launch in the country.

Oatside a Covid product as Lim first started working on his recipe during the lockdowns in Singapore.

“I had a lot of time in my hands, so I started ordering oats from different countries — Sweden, Finland and Australia — to test them out. I extracted them with enzymes and that’s when I realize not all oats are the same,” Lim related.

He found that Australian oats are more nutty compared to others countries that could taste more grassy.

“Australian oats are also more rounded so we decide to go with that variety.”

It would take another 18 months for Lim to start Oatside’s mass production but it proved to be worth it as in 2022, after capturing the Singaporean market, the brand became available internationally.

Oatside held its official launch in the Philippines at Papakape, Fort Santiago, Intramuros in a true Filipino Fiesta style hosted by Sam YG and Erwan Heussaff.

“I’ve been a fan of Oatside from its coffee partners, and I’m so excited that it’s finally reached Philippine shelves,” said Sam YG.

“I’ve tried to make my own oat milk at home because I haven’t found the right one in our markets, but Oatside just changed the game for all of us,” Heussaff also noted.

Oatside is now available at Landers, Puregold and other leading supermarkets. It’s also available online via Lazada and Shopee.
