PH, Sweden sign defense agreement

FRANCO JOSE C. BAROÑA

THE Philippines has signed an agreement with Sweden that will allow Swedish defense industries to participate in the modernization program of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Defense chief Carlito Galvez Jr. and Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the acquisition of defense materiel between the two countries at the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue organized by the International Institute for Strategic Studies held in Singapore from June 2 to 4, Department of National Defense spokesman Arsenio Andolong said on Monday.

Andolong said the MOU signing was the highlight of the first bilateral meeting of the two officials.

The agreement covers cooperation in the areas of logistics, defense industry development and exchange of related information between the two countries.

“The agreement also opens up opportunities for possible joint initiatives in support of the Philippines’ thrust to achieve a SelfReliant Defense Posture,” Andolong said.
