CALOOCAN City Mayor Dave Gonzalo Malapitan handed cash rewards to six homegrown athletes who won medals during the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The city’s Sports Development and Recreation (SDR) head Dindo Simpao presented the medalists to the mayor and other city officials during a ceremony held on Monday at the City Hall Complex.

The medalists include Jayson Cayari of Barangay 171, who won the bronze in the jiu-jitsu men’s duo, brothers Harvey and Karl Navarro of Barangay 86, and Justine Perez of Barangay 160 took home the bronze in e-sports (Crossfire).

Ivan Agustin of Barangay 171 won the silver in the karate men’s 84kg kumite, and Jerard Jacinto of Barangay 15 who won a silver and bronze and set a new Philippine record in the men’s 50-m backstroke swimming.

Malapitan thanked the medalists for bringing honor and pride to Caloocan and the Philippines.

He affirmed that the city government will continue to support its athletes through the SDR.

Malapitan directed Simpao to continuously discover and train athletes from the city’s 188 barangay (villages) for local and international competitions.

“Your victory during the last SEA Games was only meant for us here in the city government to double our efforts to further strengthen our program to encourage more residents to get into sports as they are assured of our full support,” Malapitan said.

Each silver medalist received P30,000 and bronze winners got P20,000.
