Bejino, Asusano pocket 2nd gold

GARY Bejino in swimming and Cendy Asusano in athletics continued their winning ways in the 12th Asean Para Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on Monday, June 5.

Bejino and Asusano triumphed in the men’s 200-m freestyle S6 event and women’s F54 javelin throw, respectively, as they delivered the Philippines’ ninth and 10th overall gold medals in the ongoing Games.

Seizing their second gold medals in each, Bejino clocked 2:38.55 to win his event at the Morodok Aquatic Center as Asusano made a 13.47-m throw at the Morodok Techo Stadium.

Bejino was way ahead of the two other podium finishers, with silver medalist Channi

Wongnonthaphum of Thailand and bronze winner Do Thanh Hai of Vietnam clocking 2:53.100 and 2:54.230, respectively.

On the other hand, Asusano defeated compatriot Marites Burce who settled for silver with a throw of 11.96 m. Tran Thi Tu of Vietnam completed the podium, seizing the bronze with an 11.87-m throw.

Bejino and Asusano’s championship runs were a fitting follow-up to their golden performances on Sunday, June 4.

Bejino established a new Asean Para Games standard time of 5:38.260 in the 400-m freestyle S6 to win his and the Philippines’ first overall gold in the Games.

Asusano, meanwhile, threw the ball covering a 5.77-m distance to win the gold in the women’s shot put F54.

The Philippines’ gold medal drive of the day didn’t just stop with Bejino and Asusano, though.

Another swimmer in Ariel Joseph Alegarbes gave the country its 11th gold after ruling the men’s 50-m butterfly S14 event with a time of 26.69 seconds at the Morodok Aquatic Center.

Bryan Kai of Malaysia finished second to Alegarbes with a clocking of 27.060 as his compatriot Muhammad Redzuan registered 27.530 seconds and placed third.

Alegarbes also hiked his medal haul to two after claiming a silver in the men’s 100-m breaststroke SB14 event on Monday.
