PH, LAOS REAFFIRM ASEAN CENTRALITY

BERNADETTE E. TAMAYO

THE Philippines and Laos, through their respective foreign ministers, have reaffirmed Asean’s (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) centrality in addressing various issues and challenges that it faces.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo and Laos Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith made the commitment during the 2nd Philippines-Laos Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) held from August 3 to 4 in Vientiane.

Manalo assured Kommasith of the Philippines’ support for Laos’ Asean chairmanship in 2024 as they reviewed the state of bilateral relations between Manila and Vientiane.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the two officials discussed existing cooperation on security and defense; health; gender and women’s development; as well as trade and investment.

They expressed confidence that the close ties between the two countries will be further bolstered through new areas of collaboration, such as in renewable energy, technology and communication, tourism, education and sports, and disaster management.

The foreign ministers also discussed the possibility of direct flights between the Philippines and Laos to boost trade, investment and tourism.

Manalo also met with leaders of the Filipino community in Laos. About 2,000 Filipinos are in Laos, the majority of them working in the education and hospitality sectors.

The DFA said Manalo concluded his visit with a call on Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, who expressed his appreciation to the Philippines for the enduring partnership.

The Philippines and Laos established relations in 1955 and will celebrate their 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025.
