LIGHT Rail Transit (LRT)-1 operator Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC), in partnership with digital banking app Maya, launched on Thursday its QR (quick response) code ticketing system.

The new system allows commuters to purchase single journey LRT-1 QR tickets using the Maya app and scan the generated QR code at fast lanes located at all LRT-1 Stations.

“Through this initiative, we are empowering our LRT-1 passengers with more options so that they can commute more conveniently. We remain steadfast in our commitment to improve the commuter experience and make rail an attractive, affordable, and sustainable transport solution,” LRMC President and CEO Juan Alfonso.

Maya Group President and Maya Bank co-founder Shailesh Baidwan said digital transactions and contactless approach in purchasing LRT tickets “fosters public health and safety” which is “crucial in our present times.”

Transport Secretary Jaime Bautista welcomed the initiative, noting that service innovation has been the hallmark of LRMC’s efforts to improve the commuter experience.

“LRMC’s focus on passengers completely aligns with the Department of Transportation’s thrust of benefitting public transport; this demonstrates the successful synergy between the private operators of LRT1 and DoTr’s (Department of Transportation) public service mandate,” Bautista said.
