About 1,000 villagers marched around the city on May 11 and later took an audience with the election and police officials to condemn alleged vote-buying, non-inclusion of 4,255 ballots and other irregularities here. Waving placards and chanting irregularities in the May 9 elections, the protesters allied with losing mayoral bet Joseph “Otep” Miranda, son of former City mayor Jose “Pempe” Miranda, met Santiago City acting election officer Wilma Binbinon and police chief Col. Reynaldo de la Cruz to thresh out the issues. Miranda’s counsel Nelia Natividad and the former mayor claimed that they have documented the irregularities of massive vote-buying, other election offenses, and the non-inclusion of 4,255 rejected and misread ballots that would have allegedly brought Miranda into victory. Both Binbinon and de la Cruz advised the complainants to properly put the complaints in writing and file charges before the proper courts, the Commission on Elections, and the police, if necessary. Fourth District Rep. Sheena Tan-Dy, wife of reelected Sixth District Rep. Faustino “Inno” Dy 4th, who won the mayoral seat, did not issue any statement on the matter. Repeated attempts to contact her went futile. Tan-Dy won with 43,416 votes over second-ranked Miranda with 42,631 votes — barely 785 votes separating the rivals. Actual voters had reached 91,566 out of the 111,285 registered voters in the city.
