Muslim fisherman shot in Zamboanga

ZAMBOANGA CITY: One of two Muslim anglers fishing near a trawler was shot and wounded off the southern Philippine port city of Zamboanga, police reported on Monday.

Police said Arkdaian Aguig Hamja was hit in the forehead. His companion, Gapur Hamjalun Alih, rushed him to the hospital.

Alih told police investigators that they were fishing late Sunday near a boat with markings “Nancy Fishing Boat” when they heard a gunshot. Alih said he then saw Hamja bleeding and brought him to hospital. It was unclear where the shot came from.

Maj. Shellamie Chang, a regional police spokeswoman, also quoting a police report, said: “Investigation disclosed that prior to the incident, the victim together with his companion, Gapur Hamjalun Alih, were onboard a boat with body mark ‘Teamina’ and were fishing near a ship with body mark ‘Nancy Fishing Boat.’ Thereafter, the victim and his companion heard a gunshot when they were about to leave the area.”

“The victim sustained a gunshot wound in his forehead and was immediately brought to Labuan General Hospital for medical attention and later transferred to Zamboanga Doctor’s Hospital for further medication,” she added.
