BY GABRIEL CARDINOZA
LINGAYEN, Pangasinan: Strong winds and heavy rain spawned by Typhoon “Egay” blew off roofs, toppled trees and flooded many parts of Pangasinan, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) here said on Wednesday.
No casualties were reported before noon Wednesday, but the PDRRMO said that 46 families, consisting of 159 individuals, were affected by the typhoon in Alaminos City and the towns of Mangatarem, Binmaley, Manaoag, Lingayen, Bani, Anda and Calasiao.
In Dagupan City, some 100 families were taken to different shelters after a tornado hit an island village and blew off roofs from houses and business establishments, said Ronald de Guzman, head of the city disaster risk reduction and management office.
The tornado also tore a portion of the roof off a building at the University of Pangasinan and knocked down an advertising billboard in Calasiao town on Tuesday afternoon.
Due to toppled trees and debris, some secondary roads in the towns of Agno, Aguilar, Binmaley and Manaoag and in San Carlos City had to be temporarily closed for clearing.
The PDRRMO said some houses in Calasiao town were also destroyed by the typhoon, but its engineering office was still assessing the total damage.
Acting Gov. Mark Ronald Lambino suspended classes in all levels and work in government agencies in the province. Classes and work in government offices in Dagupan, which is an independent component city, have also been suspended by acting mayor Dean Bryan Kua since Tuesday.
De Guzman said that flooding had been reported in at least 10 of the 31 Dagupan villages. Flash floods also submerged some villages in the towns of Bayambang, Binmaley and San Fabian, and San Carlos City.
The PDRRMO said that a hanging bridge in Barangay Quinaoayanan in Bani town was damaged.
As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, the Dagupan Electric Corp. was still restoring power in some villages within its franchise area.
