Mayor Benjamin Magalong recently issued a final warning to public utility jeepney (PUJ) associations in the Summer Capital to immediately address the problem of “momma” (betel nut) spit in their respective terminals. In line with this, members of the city’s Momma Core Team revisited PUJ terminals and nearby establishments to check for momma stains, scattered cigarette butts, and overall cleanliness and orderliness of the areas. Public Order and Safety Division head enforcer Daryll Longid said that most areas were found cleaner now than when they first inspected them. “We are reminding concerned stakeholders to maintain cleanliness and discourage others from improper spitting of their momma,” he said. In 2020, the city council passed an ordinance banning the chewing and spitting of betel nuts in public places without the required spittoon. The team is also composed of the City Health Services Traffic Management Office, Baguio City Police Office, Traffic and Transportation Management Division of the City Engineering Office, Smoke-Free Baguio Task Force, and barangay officials where they also checked the orderliness of parking of the PUJ units. Aside from the inspection, the team also visited stalls selling cigarettes and operating despite having been served with closure orders and allegedly having no business permits.
