NU eyes 5-0 start in UAAP volleyball

NATIONAL University (NU) looks to stay spotless when it faces the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 84 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena today, May 14.

Game time is 12 noon.

The top seed Lady Bulldogs (4-0) are coming off a 25-11, 25-20, 25-13 win over the University of the East Red Warriors last Thursday.

NU head coach Karl Dimaculangan said that his team needs to sustain the hot start as the Jhocson-based school eyes to make the Final Four this season.

“We’re excited every game, we’re always ready. We need to sustain this until the second round or until we make the Final Four,” he said.

“That’s our goal, that’s why we prepare every game for whichever team we face.”

While the Lady Bulldogs are coming off a rousing victory, the second seed Golden Tigresses (3-1) had to earn a five-set win over the De La Salle University Lady Spikers, 26-24, 22-25, 25-27, 25-23, 15-12.

Eya Laure led UST in that contest with 28 points off 23 attacks, three aces, and two blocks on top of 20 excellent digs and 19 excellent receptions.

But she was not alone in the fight as Ysa Jimenez and Camille Victoria also came through with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

“Our support system was present this time around. That’s what we were missing last game. You saw the outcome where Eya was the only one doing the work,” UST coach Kung Fu Reyes said.

“This time it’s a collective effort. It’s a good indication that at least we’re still here in the UAAP, and we’re still playing at a high level.”
