Angela Ken shares journey and struggles in debut album

BY IZA IGLESIAS

ANGELA Ken may have just started her career recently by singing, composing and publishing her songs on TikTok, but this 20yearold is already on the right path to become one of the biggest talents in the years to come.

After releasing her single “Ako Naman Muna” in 2021, she signed with Star Magic and eventually became a member of the Squad Plus. Thereafter, Ken also interpreted “Sila Pa Rin” for the soundtrack of “Marry Me, Marry You” and “If We Fall in Love” of drama series “Saying Goodbye.”

While she also did well in her debut in the hit series “Lyric and Beat” this year, Ken continues to make a mark in the music industry, even taking home two music accolades — Best Inspirational Song for “Ako Naman Muna” at the Awit Awards 2022 in November 23 and Best Secular Song for “It’s Okay Not To Be Okay” at the 44th Catholic Mass Media Awards in December 4.

Sharing this experience in a media conference, Ken said, “Hindi ako nag-expect pero syempre nagdasal ako. Hindi ma-process ng utak ko na kanta ko yung sinabi na nanalo. Cloud nine talaga yung feeling ko at nakasama ko pa yung nanay ko kaya hindi ko nakontrol yung iyak ko. Sobrang speechless pa rin ako hanggang ngayon.”

This time around, the Star Music artist has released her selfTITLED DEBUT ALBUM fiLLED WITH HER teenage experience, friendship, and self-love in this digital age.

“As a singer-songwriter, lahat kami nangangarap na magkaroon ng collection ng mga kanta namin at ipakita sa maraming tao yung craft at passion namin. So for me it’s really a blessing na mabigyan ako ng opportunity to write songs and to also compile them as an album,” she mentioned.

Writing the album reminded the rising star of her humble beginnings as an artist.

“Kailangan mong balikan palagi kung saan ka nagsimula, kung ano yung naging pundasyon bakit ka na nasa sitwasyon mo ngayon, at bakit ganito karami ang sumusuporta sayo,” Ken explained.

Her self-titled album consists of two brand new songs, “Buti Pa Noon” and “Payapa Lang,” and six previously released singles, including “Ako Naman Muna,” “Dagdag Na Alaala,” “It’s Okay Not To Be Okay,” and “Sila Pa Rin.”

Its key track “Payapa Lang” talks about how important it is to value people who stand by during happy and lonely times of life. One of its lines goes, “Sadyang kay hirap amuhin ang lahat kaya ingatan ang sa iyo’y tapat. Kung sila’y lilisan, hayaan mo na lamang. Mahalin silang sa’yo’y ‘di nang-iwan.”

On the other hand,“2 Good 2 Be True” soundtrack “Akala Maling Akala,” and “Click Like Share’s” OST “Kontrol” are also part of the album, which was produced by ABS-CBN Music creative director Jonathan Manalo who discovered Ken in TikTok.

Manalo said of Ken, “Nakita ko yung growth niya kasi nagsimula si Angela na sumusulat ng songs for herself. That’s usually how it starts. Ngayon nakikita ko na kay Angela yung desire for her to write songs not just for herself but for other people based on other people’s experiences. Alam kong malayo pa ang mararating ni Angela.”

Feel the sentimental vibes of her debut album “Angela Ken” by streaming it on various digital platforms and watching the lyric video of “Payapa Lang” on YouTube.
