Science, family, drama in ‘Unica Hija’

GMA is at it again — combining a science concept to create a new TV drama that Filipinos can still relate to. Debuting today on afternoon times lot, “Unica Hija” is a dramasci-fi that tackles human cloning.
It stars Kate Valdez as Bianca and Hope, Faith da Silva as Carnation, and Kelvin Miranda as Ralph, as well as Katrina Halili as Diane and Mark Herras as Zach.
Unica Hija follows the story of Dr. Christian (Alfred Vargas) who develops a genetic engineering project but unfortunately neglects his wife, Diane (Halili), and their daughter, Bianca (Valdez).
Tragedy strikes when Bianca dies in an accident. Diane blames her husband for Bianca’s tragic death and leaves Dr. Christian shattered and desperate. He then comes up with a daring plan to bring back his daughter through human cloning and hopes that this will also fix their family.
Dr. Christian successfully clones his daughter but another tragedy strikes when a colleague steals the baby. Will Dr. Christian save and find his daughter? Will the cloned daughter be able to have a normal life just like the others? Will Diane learn to love a human clone of late daughter, Bianca? These are the questions that the drama will try to answer.
The possibility of human cloning has been the subject of ethical and moral debate over the years. Unica Hija will try to put these arguments regarding cloning in a different context and from a different point of view — that of the clone.
“More than the science, kakaiba siya because it’s about finding your identity. Ayon sa nga sa kasabihan, ‘madaling maging tao, mahirap magpakatao.’ Dito sa soap namin, hindi lang science yung gusto naming ipakita but also kung paano maging tao. At the end of the day, it’s about acceptance and second chances,” show director Mark Sicat Dela Cruz said. For lead star Valdez, portraying two characters — the original Bianca and her eventual clone — brings its own set of challenges.
“I’m not gonna lie, mahirap siya. First time kong magkaroon ng ganitong project at maingat talaga namin siyang ginagawa
dahil sensitive ang story. But we promise na maraming matututunan ang viewers dahil hindi lang siya sa science at cloning naka-focus,” Valdez shared.
Her leading man agreed adding that now is the perfect time to give the viewers something unique with the out-of-the-box concept of the series.
“Mas mabuting ipakita na ang mga ganitong tema sa mga manonood para maihatid natin ‘yung mas malalim na mensahe nito, which are acceptance and second chances,” Miranda said.
Unica Hija airs on GMA Afternoon Prime, Mondays to Fridays at 3:25 p.m., beginning today. Viewers abroad can also catch the program via GMA Pinoy TV.
