Abando rules slam dunk contest in South Korea

RHENZ Abando continues his flying act in South Korea.

Abando, who plays for Anyang KGC, put on a show and ruled the Korean Basketball League (KBL) dunk contest on Sunday at the Suwon KT Arena.

Abando amassed a perfect 100-point performance in the competition, besting Suwon KT SonicBoom’s Ha Yun-gi (90 points), Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus’ Choi Jin-soo (89) and Goyang Carrot Jumpers’ Park Jin-cheol (87).

The 6-foot-2 Abando pocketed the prize of 2 million South Korean won or about 88,000 in Philippine peso.

Abando pulled off an emphatic two-handed 360 dunk, a twohanded baseline dunk off an RJ Abarrientos pass off the side of the board, and a backboard tap (using the basketball to tap the backboard) reverse jam.

That bevy of dunks got Abando 50 points in the first round.

Abando got the other 50 in the second where he unleashed a reverse two-handed windmill jam, a onehanded windmill, a double clutch reverse dunk and a tomahawk dunk.

But the NCAA Season 97 Rookie-MVP didn’t just stop in the dunk contest.

He also led the Filipino imports past Team KBL 13-7 in the 3x3 contest where he teamed up with Abarrientos and SJ Belangel.

Meanwhile, Abarrientos scored 13 points in the Three-Point Shootout contest but failed to advance to the final round.
